Prince william spoke to boxer Lauren Price before she left with the GB team for Japan ahead of the Olympics. During their conversation, which focused on his background, struggles during the pandemic and the Olympic dream, the Duke of Cambridge became outspoken about his own relationship with the sport.

Ms Price described how she won 52 caps for Wales as a kickboxer.

The extraordinary athlete became a quadruple kickboxing world champion before the age of 16.

But, as sport is not an Olympic discipline, she decided to switch to boxing to fulfill her dream of competing in the Olympics.

Stunned by his abilities, the Duke of Cambridge said: “You see Lauren, I have a problem, I’m not even good at one sport and you are already good at three sports.”

Prince William is an avid sportsman and an advocate for the positive impact sport can have on people’s lives.

He has ties to several organizations – including the Football Association, of which he became president in 2006.

In 2019, he united his love for football with his work on mental health, creating the Heads Up initiative, which aimed to make conversations about mental health as easy as those focused on football.

In 2006, Prince William became royal vice-godfather of the Welsh Rugby Union and godfather of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust in 2012.

Two years later he also accepted an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club.

But the Duke of Cambridge not only enjoys watching sports, he has also tried a few, including swimming and scuba diving.

In 2019, Prince William and Kate took part in a charity regatta that honored eight of their sponsorships.

Last week, the Duke played polo at a prestigious event that raised funds for some of the charities he supports.

During the interview for the BBC, Prince William overheard Ms Price talk about her experience as a taxi driver “picking up all the drunks on a Friday and Saturday night”.

The Duke, laughing, said: “I bet they weren’t laughing at you, Lauren.”

Ms Prince also explained to Prince William how she prepared for the Olympics and how difficult it has been to keep mentally and physically fit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After admitting that she started to doubt her abilities after 18 months outside the ring, she said: “Mentally it was very difficult, sometimes difficult.”

She also said: “To be fair to GB Boxing, they have helped me tremendously.

“They sent me materials, weights. I was doing squats with wheelie bins, using them as squat stands.

“I had a lot of question marks in my head… 18 months out of the ring, it was ‘am I as good as before?'”

Ms Price also opened up about losing her beloved grandfather to dementia last year, before he could see his qualification for the Games.

She said: “It’s something that I take with me to the ring. I know he always despises me.”

At the end of their conversation, Prince William presented Ms Price with a ring-shaped birthday cake.

He said: “We wish you all good luck and will encourage you.”

After saying he would make everyone proud, the Duke wished Ms Price “good luck”.

This interview was published after Princess Anne, president of the GB team, wished the British athletes good luck ahead of the match in a moving video.
