Former President and outgoing Goblin King Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he was launch of Truth Social, a MAGA competitor for Facebook and Twitter, where fanatics and conspiracy theorists can roam away from the prying eyes of mods. This is very bad news for its circus parade of competitors, including Talking, meeting place of the attack on the Capitol and a myriad of others C-list candidates for the right-wing social throne.
For GETTR, the deadly social network run by longtime Trump adviser Jason Miller, that must be humiliating.
For those with thankfully short memories of anything to do with the Donald, the ex-president was banned from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and pretty much every other mainstream social media site after urging his supporters to attack the Capitol building on January 1. 6, 2021. Righties entered a predictable uproar, but for social networks that had billed themselves as free speech havens in the face of Big Tech tyranny, this was an opportunity to lure Trump and its huge fan base in their coffers.
Speak, which is supported by the GOP mega-donor Rebecca Mercer and reportedly despaired of Trump’s patronage so much that he offered him a massive de facto bribe, never succeeded in getting him to settle down. Trump also didn’t immediately sign up for any of his other competitors and instead started his own blog, which he raged quickly after it generated nothing but pathetic numbers of pageviews. In June, Assistant Miller, who was still working for Trump at the time, Explain that the blog was “only an adjunct to the larger efforts we are leading and working on”.
Soon after, someone from Trump’s team started teasing that Trump would soon be joining a ‘next-gen’ social media site, and Miller left to become CEO of GETTR in the middle of an attempt to generate a media buzz, it was the project of the ex-president was so excited about. It’s reasonable to guess that Miller might have thought his former boss was backing him. But Trump is at least a regular backstabber and avoided Miller’s site when it launched on July 4. (He did it join Rumble, A conservationist Clone YouTube.)
GETTR apparently emerged from a business network operated by Guo Wengui, a Chinese businessman who fled the country in 2014 to escape what he says are politically motivated bribery charges and worse, such as kidnapping and rape. Guo has spent much of his time in the United States since exhibiting behavior that strongly suggests that there was a little more truth to these accusations than he claims. Despite efforts to obscure his financial ties, Guo is very clearly the key figure in a network of shady media companies that promote the far right. content of conspiracy theory and disinformation (three of which have just been settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission for $ 539 million on fraud charges) and is the architect of a personality tracking cult in the Chinese diaspora.
Guo and the media companies associated with him have close ties with Steve Bannon, Breitbart News co-founder and former White House chief strategist, when the FBI arrested Bannon for his role in a GoFundMe-based “We Build the Wall” scam, it was on Guo’s yacht. From the Daily Beast, GETTR and its predecessor site Getonme may originally have been a vanity project for Guo. GTV, one of the Guo-related sites, promoted GETTR as a source of “virus truth” for weeks before launch, and early users appeared to be mostly Guo stans. To put it another way, there are clear signs that GETTR’s presentation to the MAGA crowd was a hasty overhaul of a Guo fan site, which Miller was brought in to direct.
Another reason Trump may have kept his distance is that it was immediately clear at launch that GETTR was the product of astounding incompetence – for example, it was immediately hacked to modify the profiles of all users, and an insecure API allowed hackers to retrieve and dump information on tens of thousands of users. Many of the users who joined appeared to be trolls interested in little more than anime porn post and photos of men in childbirth, and later his almost complete lack of moderation would have inundated him with Islamic State propaganda and child abuse images.
âThese issues were resolved immediately,â the person who manages the [email protected] account told Gizmodo via email.
âGETTR, which doesn’t cancel people out for their political views, was officially launched on July 4 and is already approaching three million registered users,â they added. âGETTR reached its first million users within three days of launch and solidified its place in history as the fastest growing social media platform of all time. In comparison, Twitter took 24 months to attract a million users while Facebook took 10 months.
A quick search of GETTR showed that the news of Trump’s announcement created both interest and some confusion as to which site would be the preferred destination for the MAGA crowd.
According to App Annie, GETTR has been ranked as the 79th most downloaded social media app on Android from October 14, and in 186th place on iOS. On October 21, App Annie ranked GETTR 86th in the category of free social networking apps on iOS, behind others like “Homework_Helper”, “Addchat – Random Chat” and “Cougar: Dating Mature Women”. In the corresponding Google Play category on App Annie, it was ranked 76th, behind competitors such as “Jekmate Shows – Private Video Streaming & Pics” and “IWantU – Real Local Dating”.
GETTR did not respond to a question about how it would turn out now that Trump has created his own competitor, or if Miller feels like Trump will join GETTR when he leaves the former president’s job. . But he passed on a statement in which Miller, presumably gritting his teeth, praised Trump for supposedly helping him erode Twitter and Facebook’s market share and admitted they “couldn’t strike a deal. “:
â5 From now on, Facebook and Twitter will lose even more market share. President Trump has always been a great deal maker, but we just couldn’t agree on a deal. And get ready for the new features of the GETTR platform: live streaming, short GVision videos and the capabilities of our GETTR Pay payment system. Exciting new additions that will provide our global customer base with an even better user experience. Let the downloads begin! “
From Raw Story, in an interview with Real America’s Voice on Thursday, Miller said the President was a “very tough negotiator” and “There have been a few times over the past few months that I think I remember Chapter 7 of The art of business and so I sort of live it in real time. He reassured viewers (and perhaps himself) that he and Trump were “still very strong allies” and that he is “still his number one winger. We’re just in a little competition right now on the social media side, but it will be nice to find his voice here. “
In a same day live broadcast on GETTRMiller was slightly more desperate, telling users, “It was never about one person.”
Whether the respect is mutual is debatable. In Truth Social’s pitch deck, a member of the Trump team did a discreet search of the site, superimpose its logo on a Chinese flag.
