Environmental document released for a 30-day comment period
July 6, 2021 – BARSTOW, California – The Bureau of Land Management, Barstow Field Office, is seeking public input on the environmental analysis of the remediation actions proposed at the Calico Early Man site located 15 miles northeast of Barstow, California, in San Bernardino County. .
The BLM proposes to clean up the remains of archaeological excavations and to study the characteristics of the site, as they constitute a significant threat to public safety on the site. The method of remediation (e.g. installation of domes / ventilation doors, backfilling, removal, etc.) for each feature depends on both the historical significance of that feature and its potential threat to health. and human security. Once the public safety concerns were resolved, the site would be reopened to the public for self-guided tours; the location has been closed since 2017.
The publication of the environmental assessment begins a 30-day comment period. Substantive comments must be received by August 2, 2021.
