The 24-year-old start-up founder and 25-year-old AI engineer had an obvious connection during the game, but only really explored that after their evictions when they got to the jury.
“I think we both really felt the chemistry once we got to the jury house and we could really connect,” Claire said exclusively. We in a joint interview. “We stayed up late talking every night and we really developed a bond.”
Derek says that’s when things really started to move. “I remember the first or second night she was there, we stayed up all night talking until 5 in the morning. This happened every night for the first, like, five days. That’s when I really started to think, “Wait a second, why didn’t this happen in the house? There is such a strong connection and chemistry between us. I think that was the start of our thinking about what this could be.
While their romance didn’t start on camera, the new couple, who both live in New York City, don’t deny that there was an attraction from the start, and their connection deepened once. that they were able to speak without the live sources watching their every move.
“I knew from week one that Claire was my type,” Derek said. “I guess I never let myself explore this beyond a simple friendship. I mean you saw what happened to Alyssa [Lopez] and Christian [Birkenberger] week one. For me, despite being eliminated very early (laughs), I wanted to win this game. … I knew that if I let myself go, I would fall in love with Claire in the house.
“Once you’re off camera that’s when you really learn who a person is and where you can really be vulnerable and you can really be open and really talk about a lot of things in your life,” explains Claire.
He adds: “I feel like I know Claire better than I know a lot of my best friends.”
As for how their fellow guests reacted to the surprise romance, the couple say they were only supportive.
“The other guests were very aware of what was going on,” explains Claire. “Me and Alyssa were roommates on the jury. She was like my confidante. Everyone was also helping us to try to get around the Jury House officials. So everyone in the jury house knew what was going on. It wasn’t like a dirty little secret in the boathouse or anything. It was very fun.”
