Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness out in theaters this Friday. The film takes place after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Marvel series WandaVision. After Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, opens the portal to the multiverse in Tom Holland’s film, various versions of existing characters entered the main universe and created chaos.

According to the trailer, Strange enlists Wanda, played by Elizabeth Olsen, to sort things out. At the end of the Marvel series, Wanda transformed into Scarlet Witch and became one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi, known for bringing back superhero movie culture with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire recently reprized his character in Spider-Man: No Way Home, after the gates to the multiverse were opened by Doctor Strange. In a recent chat with AP, Sam said, “I was really trying to do a Marvel movie, first and foremost. I guess everyone does things their own way, not trying to make them specifically anything other than what they were. I was really trying to follow the characters from previous Marvel movies and the Wandavision storylines had led and where all the Avengers movies had led. But also try to open up the multiverse as Marvel asked writer Michael Waldron for future adventures.

Early reactions to Doctor Strange 2 called it a “horror movie.” Perri Nemiroff of Collider wrote: “MARVEL MADE A HORROR MOVIE! It’s weird, scary, and deserves the Multiverse of Madness title. If you were the least bit afraid this movie wouldn’t feel Sam Raimi enough, fear not! I can’t imagine a more Sam Raimi MCU movie. My genre-loving heart is bursting right now.

Fandango’s Erik Davis wrote, “Hands down the scariest, gnarliest, goofiest, haunting and terrifying Marvel movie, #MultiverseOfMadness definitely brings the horror vibes of Sam Raimi, and I have loved that. Danny Elfman’s music perfectly matches the weird and mysterious tone of the movie and Elizabeth Olsen is MVP, imo.
