Depp’s lawyer accuses Heard of faking tears in ‘execution of his life’
The jury in the libel trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard resumed deliberations on Tuesday after a three-day weekend.
Depp sued Heard for $50 million for suggesting he abused her in 2018 Washington Post editorial. Although she did not name him, he says her allegations have impacted his ability to work. She is pursuing a $100 million counterclaim.
During closing arguments on Friday, Depp’s attorneys asked jurors to “return her life” after she was “ruined” by Heard’s domestic violence allegations. They alleged Heard would rather fight than let the actor go, called her claims an act of profound cruelty to true survivors and said she gave the performance of her life on the helm.
In their conclusion, Heard’s attorneys said a ruling in favor of Depp would make jurors an “accomplice” to his abuse and “campaign of global humiliation,” and called the actor “laughing” and “sarcastic comments” during closing arguments, adding that he had pledged to “blame the victim in its most disgusting form”.
Depp’s team filed a denied motion on Tuesday to strike out part of Heard’s closing, which asked jurors to consider the “message” a ruling against her would send to other abuse victims.
How does the jury work?
A seven-person jury was appointed for this case.
According Court Televisionthe jurors include five men and two women, with two alternate jurors remaining on standby if any of the main class members are fired or have to step down.
Talk to The Washington PostJamie R. Abrams, a law professor at the University of Louisville, said of jurors: “One challenge they likely face is staying focused on the case at hand without allowing all of their own lived experiences and biases to drive them in the blink of an eye. judgment that is not supported by testimony.
“Jury instructions are very concrete in helping jurors focus on a legal issue, but it’s a real challenge on a human level.”

The unlikely cult celebrities of the trial
Fans of the estranged couple have exhaustively documented every movement and mannerism of plaintiff and defendant in court, their lawyers’ arguments, the judge’s interventions and a multitude of colorful testimonies on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter, cutting out what would have could amount to arid legal proceedings in spectator sport.
All of this has raised disapproving eyebrows in some quarters, with concerns expressed that the real issue at the heart of the case, domestic abuse, is getting lost in what has become a tacky viral soap opera.
While those reviews are more than valid, there’s no doubt that the trial provided an extraordinary spectacle and an unforgettable cast of supporting characters who found themselves unlikely cult celebrities.

Amber Heard’s lawyer accused Johnny Depp of ‘laughing and making sarcastic remarks’ in court as the jury saw a video which the actor himself said showed him ‘assaulting cabinets’.
Barrister Ben Rottenborn replayed the video – filmed by Ms Heard in 2016 – during closing arguments in the couple’s libel trial on Friday.
Mr Rottenborn sought to refute testimony from a former TMZ employee that the video, which shows Mr Depp bursting into a kitchen slamming cupboards, was sent directly to the outlet by Ms Heard in the purpose of smearing him after their divorce.
