A sold-out crowd is expected as Chimp Haven Discovery Day returns for the first time since 2019

After a three-year hiatus, Chimp Haven, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, brings back Chimpanzee Discovery Day, a rare opportunity to get an insider’s look at the 200-acre wooded campus that more than 300 chimpanzees know as home – and tickets are going fast.

On Saturday, October 15, visitors will once again be invited to explore the sanctuary and experience the lush forest habitats where the chimpanzees, most of whom are retired from biomedical research, now live and play. To ensure that all visitors arriving at the sanctuary can attend the event, Chimp Haven has moved all ticket sales online and tickets must be purchased in advance.

Discovery Day is open to all ages and will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on October 15. Admission is $10 for visitors ages 6 and up and free for children ages 5 and under. We recommend arriving at 9am when the chimpanzees are most active after a night’s rest! Advance tickets and additional dates for Chimp Haven events are available online only at chimphaven.org/visit/.

“After three years, we’re thrilled to bring back a discovery day, so people have the opportunity to see the beauty of chimps living the ‘chimp life,'” said Chimp Haven President and CEO, Rana Smith. “Every event hosted at Chimp Haven is its own unique experience, and we missed being able to share the magic this place has to offer with our community.”

Animal shelters rarely allow public access for many reasons. Chimp Haven is unique in that it offers occasional open community days each year. For the past two years, the sanctuary has had to cancel chimpanzee discovery days to help ensure the safety of chimpanzees as well as human visitors due to COVID-19 precautions. These special events typically attract hundreds of visitors from across the United States

For those looking for an even deeper encounter, Chimp Haven also offers several Chimp Chat events where an exclusive group of chimpanzee lovers will receive a special introduction from an animal care staff member and a behind-the-scenes tour. of the sanctuary, including areas that are not normally accessible to the public. The first event will take place after Discovery Day on October 15 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and will return on November 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $75 per person and is available for seniors. 10 years and over.

If you can’t make it to Chimp Haven this fall, save the date for next spring. The next opportunity to visit Chimp Haven for Discovery Day (and Chimp Chat to follow) is Saturday, April 15, 2023. Advance tickets are now available for purchase at chimphaven.org/visit/.

For the safety of chimpanzees and our visitors, masks are mandatory for people who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19. A virtual tour is also available for anyone unable to make it to the shrine. To take the virtual tour, visit chimphaven.org/visit/digital-tour/
